Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager is a server virtualization management platform that is based on the open source oVirt virtualization solution. Oracle announced the General Availability of OLVM in June 2019, and subsequently adopted it  to replace its Oracle VM virtualization product that is based on the Xen hypervisor technology.

Oracle VM 2 Premier Support ended in November 2015, and Oracle VM 3 Premier Support ended in March 2021, OVM 3 Extended Support is available until June 2024.

OLVM is made up of the JBoss based oVirt engine, the Oracle Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), a host agent (the Virtual Desktop and Service Manager – VDSM) and libvirt deamon/service, and a Guest agent.

VDSM uses libvirt to manage the life cycle of virtual machines and their virtual devices, and the Guest Agent provides information and resource usage to the engine.

Why use OLVM

Oracle Licensing Optimization

OLVM can be used to partition physical resources and allocate the partitions to virtual environments (VMs). The allocation of physical resources (memory, disk, and CPU cores) to a VM is implemented in a manner that is compliant with Oracle licensing (Hard Partitioning).

Licensing for the Oracle products that are installed within the VM can then be based on the resources allocated to the VM, for more information on Oracle Hard Partitioning with Oracle Linux VM, please follow the link https://www.oracle.com/a/ocom/docs/linux/ol-kvm-hard-partitioning.pdf

Hardware Failure Tolerance

KVM hosts (servers) within the same site can be configured as an OLVM cluster, where all KVM hosts have access to shared storage, and to the same network components. When one or more KVM hosts fail, the VMs that usually run on the failed KVM host can be restarted on one of the surviving servers.

Current Technology at Minimal Cost

The use of OLVM offers a path to host application and database stacks on new hardware, and to maintain these stacks using current technology without having to incur additional licensing costs in most cases.

Why BCS

At BCS, we have all the right skills to architect, design, and build OLVM based solutions, to migrate application and database workloads into OLVM, and to support the whole stack including the KVM hosts and storage, the VMs, the virtual networking, operating systems, and the database and middleware layers. BCS has helped customers design new target architectures while avoiding additional licensing costs.
